 Cheongsams
Cheongsam (cheé-ong sahm) were formal dresses for Chinese men before the modern, Western-style suits became more popular in China. These days cheongsam are typically worn for all kinds of occasions, such as traditional celebrations or high class functions. The Cheongsam can portray a unique East Asian modernity when paired with a western overcoat.

The Asian style dresses, “ Cheongsams” and “ Qi Paos”, were introduced during the Qing dynasty (17 th20 th century). The Manchurian Qing dynasty ordered that all Han Chinese (an ethnic group indigenous to China) adopt Cheongsams and Qipao styles of dresses. Over time, these dresses gained popularity, even after the fall of the Qing dynasty.
The basic cheongsam design changed as Western fashions changed over time. It introduced high-necked sleeveless dresses, bell-like sleeves, and even black lace at the hem. By the 1940's, cheongsam came in transparent black, beaded bodices, matching capes, and even velvet.
The terms are interchangable. In Western countries the term “Cheongsam” is used for both men and women; while “Qi Pao” is exclusively used for women, or to refer to the two piece style of the dress.

Qi Pao (chee'-pow) were originally designed as a baggy dress covering most of a woman’s body. With time, however, it was tailored to be more form fitting. The modern version was first developed in Shanghai around 1900. It is now a slender fitting dress with a high slit on the side, accentuating the figures of women. As such, the Qi pao is highly popular as a dress for high society.
